Virgin TV Anywhere
From 14 February, you will not be able to use this app unless you apply the latest update. If your device is set to update apps automatically, you may not need to do anything else, but if your device is not set up this way, open the Play Store app, select My apps under the menu at the top left, and then look for the UPDATE button next to TV Anywhere.
On this app you can watch up to 100 live TV channels anywhere in the UK with Wi-Fi. You can search & browse what's on without taking over the big screen and using full QWERTY keyboard. You can discover new TV shows and old favourites in our collections, share what you’re watching on Facebook & Twitter, and manage your TiVo recordings from anywhere - at home or abroad, on Wi-Fi or 3/4G, on a wide range of tablets and mobiles.
At home, you can use the TV Anywhere app as an advanced remote control for your TiVo box, as long as your TiVo box is connected to your Super Hub via an ethernet cable, Wi-Fi adapter or Powerline kit. The advanced remote controls allow you to launch whatever show you find - live on TV, in your recordings, or in our huge On Demand library – on to the TV to start playing. The remote control icon allows you to use gesture control, drag a button along the progress bar to exactly where you want to start watching without even having to fast-forward, or use all your other great TiVo remote control features.
You can find out more useful how-to information here.
The Virgin TV Anywhere app has two different modes. Away access mode lets you do lots of stuff like watching live channels, browsing through the TV guide, recording shows or deleting shows from your box without interrupting your show, and you can use this mode at home or when you're out and about.
Home mode does all that, and acts like a super advanced remote control for your TiVo box. Once you’ve signed in to the app, it will work out if there is a TiVo box connected to the same network, and will automatically switch to home mode and enable all of the remote control features.
Want to use Home mode? First you must connect your TiVo box to your home network, with an ethernet cable if they are close to each other, or with a powerline kit or smart TV adapter if they are not in the same room. You can find ethernet cables and powerline kits in the Virgin Media Accessories Shop.
At present, the Virgin TV Anywhere app cannot be used to view live TV over mobile connections. Also, the app cannot be used to watch On Demand shows or recordings from your TiVo box other than using the app to search through these shows and then play them on your TV.
You can watch TV on up to two registered devices per Virgin Media TV account. This includes computers, where there are more live TV channels available, and you can also watch On Demand shows on TV Anywhere. See what you can watch here.
For watching shows, seeing what's on and managing your TiVo box.
To get started with the app in Away access mode, all you need to do is sign in with the main Virgin Media account username and password when prompted by the app.
Your username is the email address you will have used when you registered for My Virgin Media. If you haven’t already registered for My Virgin Media or have forgotten your details, you can get help here.
The app will find any TiVo box connected to your Virgin Media TV account, and you can select the one you want to manage. If you have more than one TiVo box, you can check the TiVo Service Number on your TiVo box, and the last 4 digits of this number will be displayed on the app, unless you have changed the name of your TiVo box in Virgin TV Anywhere on your computer. You can then change the name of your TiVo box to Lounge, Bedroom or something else that will make it easier to identify next time.
For using the app like a super remote control
Make sure your TiVo box is connected to your internet router using an ethernet cable. If your TiVo box is not in the same room as your router, you can connect using a Powerline kit or smart TV wireless adapter.
Now you need to check if your TiVo box is set to accept commands from your Virgin TV Anywhere app. By default, we do this for all TiVo boxes, but you may need to double-check if you’re a brand new customer. To do this, get your TiVo remote and go to Home > Help & Settings > Settings > Devices > Network Remote Control, then choose Allow network-based remote controls. If asked for a PIN, the default is 1234.
On your mobile or tablet make sure you have Wi-Fi switched on and connected to the same network as your TiVo box.
Sign in with the main Virgin Media account username and password when prompted by the app. Your username is the email address you will have used when you registered for My Virgin Media. If you haven’t already registered for My Virgin Media or have forgotten your details, you can get help here.
The app will find any TiVo box connected to your Virgin Media TV account, and you can select the one you want to control & manage. If you have more than one TiVo box, you can check the TiVo Service Number on your TiVo box, and the last 4 digits of this number will be displayed on the app, unless you have changed the name of your TiVo box in Virgin TV Anywhere on your computer.
You can change the TiVo box you'd like to use by selecting the drop down box in the top left of your tablet screen or under ‘Selected DVR’ in the main menu on your Android mobile.
If you’re already signed in to Away mode, tap the remote control or pause icon at the top right, then tap Connect to scan for boxes on your wireless network, and then select the TiVo box you want to control and manage.
If you're still having issues, click on the Settings cog icon at the top left of your tablet (or in the main menu on your Android mobile), and try signing out and signing back in again.
You should now be connected! If you're having any problems, check out our trouble-shooting FAQs here.
It may take up to 24 hours after your TiVo is installed for it to be fully set up on our systems. During that time, you might not be able to access your recordings and series links via the TV Anywhere app in Away mode, and the app may display some incorrect error message. If that’s the case, then try using the app again the next day.
Device changes apply to devices that you want to watch live TV on. You can use as many devices as you like to set and manage your recordings, use the remote control function or to browse shows.
A device is your Android mobile or tablet, iPad, iPad mini, iPhone, iPod touch, PC or Mac. It's what you use to watch the great selection of programmes available on TV Anywhere. Up to two devices can be registered to watch shows on TV Anywhere.
Each time you add a new device or swap devices, you are using one of your permitted 'device changes'.
You can register up to 2 devices. Once you have registered two devices, you will not be able to make another device change until the beginning of the following calendar month. After that, you can only make one device change per month.
You can keep track of your entitlement by selecting Device Registration under Settings.
When you go to watch something for the first time on your mobile or tablet you'll be asked to register your current device on the Virgin TV Anywhere device registration page that opens up in a browser window.
Assuming you haven't already used up your two available devices, you'll see a line with Available device slot. Click on REGISTER on the right of this line and you can give your device a name, such as "Johns tablet" (certain characters like apostrophes are not allowed), and then click FINISHED.
If you have already used up your two devices, you'll need to delete one of your existing devices to make a slot available. Remember that you can only make a change once a month.
You can check and change which devices you've got registered by selecting Device Registration under Settings.
On the Device Registration page (see above), you can tap on the RENAME button next to the current name for that device. Renaming a device does not count towards your allowed device changes.
Android devices that meet the minimum specification are able to download and use Virgin TV Anywhere to manage TiVo, set recordings, change series links, delete recordings, see what’s on TV, and work as an advanced remote control.
We have a selection of Android mobiles and tablets that we list as being Fully Supported. This means that we have tested the app on these devices and know that it works as it should. Most other Android devices should be able to stream live TV except for a few listed here, which we know have issues with streaming live TV on TV Anywhere. However, these devices should still be able to download the app to manage TiVo.
If your device is not listed as being Fully Supported or to Manage TiVo, it means that we expect it to work. However, due to the large number of Android devices available, we are not able to test them all, and we are not able to give support for the TV Anywhere app on these devices. If you do have a problem, you can always head over to the Virgin Media Community at community.virginmedia.com to chat with our other users, or visit our extensive online help at virginmedia.com/help/tvanywhere.
You can also watch TV Anywhere on PCs and Macs via a browser, or on the app for iPad, iPhone & iPod touch, but remember that these too count towards your device limit of two
Here's a quick guide to what the buttons on the app do
Just like the info button on your TV, this tells you everything about the show that’s playing on your TV right now – available when connected in home mode only.
This works in a similar way to your TiVo TV guide. It lets you quickly and easily search for something to watch.
Just like My Shows on your TiVo box, this lets you see what's on your TiVo box, and delete shows when you're finished with them. It'll also tell you how much free space is left on your box.
Need inspiration? Then take a look at some of the things that we like to watch here. Browse by category or see what we've got in our collections.
(see Planned Recordings & Series Link Manager on Android mobiles)
Use this to see and edit your planned recordings and Series Links.
Need a helping hand to use the app? Select this button.
(bottom of screen on mobiles)
These let you choose a range of actions, such as Watch, Record, Explore, Delete, Share and more. The buttons you see will depend on the screen you're looking at.
(Settings in main menu on mobiles)
Tap the cog icon in the navigation bar at the top of your screen to change your settings, sign out or reset the app.
Select the remote control icon to use your mobile as an advanced remote control for TiVo - use gesture or button controls, drag button on progress bar to exactly where you want to start watching a show, launch recordings, live channels or On Demand shows on your TV.
If you see the streaming symbol (looks like a Wi-Fi icon) next to a channel number in the guide, you can watch the channel live on your app.
(under Settings > Guide Channels on mobiles)
Use this drop-down menu to pick between live channels that you can watch on your app, selected favourite channels, or all channels available to watch on your TV.
Fancy watching something on your tablet or mobile? We'll show you how. Take a peek at all these live channels you can watch right here. You just need to have them in your TV package and be able to connect to Wi-Fi in the UK.
First select Guide. This will bring up the TV listings.
If you know the channel you want to watch, press the channel search button and enter the name or number of the channel (e.g. 'ESPN'). To browse through the channels, flick your finger up and down on the channel list. You can flick much quicker by using the scroll button (or grey number bar on mobiles) to the right of the channel list
To see which channels are available to watch, look for the streaming icon to the left of each channel. You can see all live channels by using the channel drop-down menu and selecting Streaming channels (under Settings > Guide Channels on mobiles).
Once you've found something to watch, select Watch now. If you're in Home Mode, you'll get two choices: Watch on TV or Watch on Tablet (or Watch on Phone on your Android mobile). The first time you watch a show on your device, you'll be asked to register your device.
For more information on how to register a device, visit our 'Devices & minimum specification' section.
You'll have loads of fun stumbling across new shows and finding out about the ones you love already, without ever interrupting what you're watching. And once you've found something you like, shout about it to all your friends on Facebook and Twitter. Just select the 'More' button when you seleted a show.
Select the search icon in the top-right-hand corner, use the listings on the Guide tab, or browse through our collections on the Browse tab
See a brief description and when the show aired.
See cast and crew for the show that you've selected.
Find out about other episodes in the series.
Select this to see when other shows from the series will be on the box.
When you've selected the show you'd like to share, click More in the menu in the top-right-hand corner (or at the bottom of the screen on mobiles).
Select either Share to Facebook or Share to Twitter.
You'll be asked to sign into your Facebook or Twitter account, if you haven't already.
Your friends will want to know why you liked the show, so why not post a comment too? Once you're done, post it to your timeline.
With Virgin TV Anywhere, you're always connected to your TiVo box, even when you're not home. This means you can do cool things like delete shows, see your planned recordings, and even record shows for later. You can do this over Wi-Fi or on 3/4G mobile networks. You can even manage your TiVo box while abroad. Here's how.
Once you've found the show you want to record, select Record.
If you just want to record that episode, select Record this episode. To record the whole series, select Get a Series Link.
If you're a complete telly addict and you've nearly filled your TiVo box (wow, that's impressive!) the Virgin TV Anywhere app will tell you there isn't enough space. Luckily, you can still go into My Shows to delete shows from your box.
Your show will be recorded and waiting for you next time you're snuggled up on your sofa. Enjoy!
Select My Shows from the bottom menu (or in the main menu list on mobiles).
You'll see a list of all the shows that you have on your TiVo box. Select which one you'd like to delete.
Select Delete from the menu in the top-right-hand corner. On mobiles, a delete option will appear when you do a long press on the show in the list, or at the bottom of the screen when you do a single click on the show.
When asked if you want to delete your show, select OK. It'll be deleted from your box, like magic.
Got a favourite actor, director or show? Set a WishList Search and you can automatically record any programme that the actor or director is in or the show the next time it's on your Virgin TV service.
Use the search bar at the top right of the screen to enter the title of the show or name of the actor you're interested in. A list of matches will appear. Tap on the best match to see more information.
If you select an actor or director, or a show that isn't available to record, the WishList button will appear. Tap this to set up your WishList.
In the options page, slide the Auto-Record button to make sure your shows are recorded, then select your recording options. Once you're happy with your options, tap on Save WishList.
Put down that remote and pick up your mobile or tablet. Virgin TV Anywhere makes controlling your box even easier with simple, responsive, gesture-based controls.
Choose between buttons just like the ones on your TiVo remote control and clever finger-flicking gestures to pause, rewind, fast-forward and find your way around your TiVo menu.
Use this to scroll around the menu on your TiVo box.
Play, pause, rewind and fast forward here.
Just like on your remote, you can use these buttons to pick a channel.
Press the thumbs buttons here and your TiVo box will remember things you like and don't like so it can make even more clever recommendations in future. Use the green thumb up if you like a programme. Use the red thumb down if you don't. Your choice will be sent directly to your TiVo box so it will remember what you like to watch in future.
This bar lets you switch to a specific part of your show. It's much quicker than fast-forwarding or rewinding with your remote.
Helps you find your way through your menu. While you're watching TV, you can scroll up and down to choose between channels, then left and right to choose between programmes.
Flick your finger in this area to play, pause, rewind, or fast-forward your show.
Press this to see how to use gesture controls.

Which channels you can view depends on your TV package. The current channel line up on the online and app service is available here. Note that our On Demand shows are only available to watch on a computer. We're adding new channels all the time, so keep checking back!
You can search for On Demand content on the app, and play what you want to watch on the TV. However you cannot currently watch On Demand shows on your tablet or mobile.
The Virgin TV Anywhere app can only be used with our Virgin Media TiVo® Service, but all TV customers can use our PC or Mac version for watching live TV and On Demand
Yes! You can browse TV listings and much more without interrupting what you're watching
Yes. You can watch live TV anywhere in the UK where you can connect to a Wi-Fi network.
You can watch live TV in your bedroom, in a hotel, on a Virgin train or in a coffee shop – anywhere with Wi-Fi.
If you'd like to find out what's on TV now and later, set or delete recordings, and loads more, you can do this at home or abroad, over Wi-Fi or over a mobile network.
If you are connected to Wi-Fi anywhere in the UK you can watch live TV using Virgin TV Anywhere. If you're abroad or on a mobile 3G connection, you can still use TV Anywhere to manage your TiVo viewing, set recordings & WishLists, delete recordings, and browse and search to Discover shows you might like.
To watch Sky Movies or Sky Sports on your tablet or mobile, you need to subscribe to Sky Movies or Sky Sports respectively with Virgin Media, and then you need to download the Sky Movies or Sky Sports app, click on the Virgin Media logo on the sign-in page, and then sign in with your My Virgin Media username and password.
The Sky Movies and Sky Sports apps are available in the Apple App Store for iPad, iPhone and iPod touch and Google Play for Android mobiles and tablets. The live channels and on demand shows are available on PCs and Macs on the Sky Movies and Sky Sports websites.
Other Sky live channels such as Sky 1, Sky 2, Sky Arts, Sky Living, Sky LivingIt, Sky News and Sky Sports News HQ are available to watch on the TV Anywhere app, as long as you have them in your Virgin Media TV package. Sky On Demand shows, with the exception of Sky Movies and Sky Sports on demand programmes, are available on TV Anywhere on PCs and Macs at virginmedia.com/tvanywhere.
No. Anyone on any network can download the Virgin TV Anywhere app. You'll just need to be a Virgin Media customer with a TiVo box to use it.
You need a Wi-Fi connection to be able to watch live TV on the app, but on a 3/4G mobile connection, you can still manage your viewing, set recordings, browse the TV listings, delete recordings and more. To use the app at home as an advanced remote control, your mobile or tablet will need to be connected to the same router as your TiVo box.
If your TiVo box is switched off, you'll just see a message saying you've lost your connection to the TiVo box, but you can use Virgin TV Anywhere when the box is in Standby.
If you lose or change your tablet or mobile, all you need to do is download the app again. You'll need to register your new one if you want to watch live TV using the app.
The TV Guide shows you everything that's on right now, and you can see what's coming up in the future. To jump to a date, day or time tap on Date in the middle bar and the date selector appears. Click the date up or down or select Now to go to the current date and time. You can find channel listings for up to 14 days in advance.
Just click on the channel name and you'll see the listings for that channel.
You can still manage your viewing, set recordings, browse the TV listings, delete recordings and more without connecting your TiVo box to your router, but to use the app as an advanced remote control, you'll need to connect your TiVo box to a wireless router with an Ethernet cable. The router needs to have a working broadband connection for Virgin TV Anywhere to work. You'll need to do this before you start using the app, so everything will work perfectly. If your TiVo box is in a different room to your Super Hub or router we'd recommend you use Powerline or a smart TV wireless adapter.
Yes, you can. You can set Virgin TV Anywhere up to be paired with all your TiVo boxes, though you can only control one TiVo box at a time. If you want to switch to another TiVo box then tap the DVR selection box at the top left of your tablet, or Selected DVR in the main menu on your mobile. If you want the app to scan for a newly connected box, then the easiest way to do this is sign out of your account and sign back in again.
You'll need to use either your TiVo remote or use the remote button on your Virgin TV Anywhere app. Using either of these to control your TiVo box, select My Shows then go to the bottom of the list on you TV screen where you'll find the Recently Deleted folder. From here you can recover your deleted recordings.
No. You'll need to have a TiVo box to use the app to set recordings.
Virgin TV Anywhere on tablets has an onscreen remote control that lets you control live TV and recorded shows, and use your TiVo box menus. Gestures mode lets you to use finger motions on your tablet to control your TiVo box. So you can change channel, fast forward, pause or rewind by swiping your finger this way or that.
Don't worry, that just means you're not subscribed to that channel. For more information visit our Store. You can upgrade your package at any time by calling us on 0800 064 3817.
Virgin TV Anywhere lets you watch on 2 different devices. This includes any Android or iOS mobiles or tablets on which you watch live TV on the app, or any PC or Mac you use to watch live TV or On Demand shows. You can use as many devices as you like however to manager your recordings or to use your mobile, tablet or iPod touch as a remote control.
You can see the channel line-up on both services here.
You do not need to register a device you are just using to manage your TiVo box.
At present, the only way to watch On Demand shows is on our online TV anywhere service using a PC or Mac, or by using the app to play these shows on your TV.
Watching Virgin TV Anywhere over our Virgin Broadband connection should be smooth and trouble free - but sometimes you might notice the video stops now and then. If this does happen, the video will carry on automatically when it's ready, so don't worry.
On some computers, if you're running lots of different applications at the same time, it can make the video start to judder. This is because TV Anywhere is sharing your computer's resources and competing against all those other applications while it's trying to play videos. Try closing some other applications and see if that helps.
This can also happen if your anti virus software is scanning at the time, so if you wait until that's complete, the quality may improve.
If you're still having problems, try chatting with some experts on the Virgin Media Community forum.
Sorry! Due to rights issues, Virgin TV Anywhere is only for streaming shows, so you won't be able to download them.
No. Our agreements with the owners of our channel content require us to copy-protect it.
Unfortunately we do not have the rights to be able to play recorded shows from your TiVo box to your app or your PC, but it's something we are looking at for the future. If you have more than one TiVo box in your home, you can however play recordings from one box to another using multi-room streaming.
You can’t watch TV behind some proxy servers (non-SOCKS proxies that don't support RTMP). This is in order to protect the rights of our content owners.
Some channels may not have the rights to show certain programmes on certain devices. If this happens, these programmes will need to be blanked out and you will see a message telling you that the show can’t be viewed on your device. This mainly happens with live sports events or UK channels with a lot of US shows. If the show is blanked out on the TV Anywhere app, it will also be blanked on our PC service. Our system to blank out certain shows uses schedule data, as opposed to transmission data. This means that blanking will be turned on for the duration of the blanked out programme’s time slot. You can still set your TiVo box to record a show that has been blanked out on TV Anywhere.
To use the app, you must log in with your main Virgin Media account. Sub-accounts may not use the service or they could register devices on the service without the knowledge or permission of the main account holder.
No. There are no age restrictions or parental controls on the programmes shown on live TV Anywhere channels, although the normal watershed rules apply to anything being shown on these channels.
Yes. If your device supports accessibility services such as TalkBack & Explore by Touch, then our app will work with these services.
If these FAQs have still not helped answer your question, please visit our Virgin Media Community forum to see if your question has already been answered by a forum user or Virgin Media expert.
