A beginners' guide to selling on eBay

Listing your item

Click the "Sell" link at the top of the page and the first page will load. Enter a few words that describe the item as requested, select the Quick Sell option and click the Start Selling button. The site will then guide you through the process.

Here are a few things to think about when you list your item.

Images
Extra images of any important details, damage or wear will inspire confidence in people to bid, and reduce their chance of disappointment and therefore of you getting negative feedback.

Description
Be precise about its condition and add anything you can think of to encourage bidders. E.g. with fragile items, you might want to say how well you would pack it, or with a DVD you might say what a funny / tense / scary film it is. It all helps.

Starting price
The lower this is, the lower the insertion fee will be, but you might end up selling the item for peanuts. Weigh this up before you make your decision. You can set a reserve price if you want, though these are unpopular with bidders.

Duration
Unless there's a good reason not to, choose the maximum length: 10 days.

What happens next?

Now we get to the exciting bit - watching the bids roll in and the money increase. Warning: this can get quite addictive.

When the auction has ended, the buyer will get an automatically generated invoice from eBay.

As soon as they have paid, you will get an email telling you where to send it. This money can then be transferred to your bank account, or you can use it to buy other items.

Congratulations: you now have some free space in your home and some money in your pocket!
