How to host your own Christmas party

Always buy more food and drink that you think you will need and remember the magic line in your invitations - "bring a bottle". You will find people will slowly begin to depart should the alcohol flow come to a halt. Food is a nice thing to have and gives people something to do with themselves if they don't drink or can't dance. Make sure vegetarians are catered for and provide snacks that don't need warming up unless you don't mind 90 people using your microwave.

Crisps, sarnies, sausage rolls, chicken legs, fruit and chopped veg with dip are usual winners, or you could go all out and hire a caterer to provide a spread of fancy finger foods. Have spares, keep them covered and top up throughout the night.

The big day

Try and have everything ready before the day before so you can spend the big day remembering all the things you forgot and making yourself look fantastic. You don't want your guests to arrive while your hair is still in rollers or you're still sporting your PJs. Ensure that there are enough drinking vessels and top up peoples' glasses every half-hour. Don't spend all night talking to one person - your guests have given you the pleasure of attending, so make them feel welcome by at least complimenting their outfit over a cheese sandwich. If your guests have brought friends, welcome them warmly as chances are they will feel like a bit of a lemon when they first arrive. Treat them to a coke and a smile.

When you're ready to call it a night, ease your guests out to by slowly turning down the music and bringing up the lights. Have some mates help peel any drunkards off the patio. Have cab firm cards handy with your address on the back and keep them by the phone. Lastly, thank everyone for coming - after all, without them it would have been a little dull.
