WiFi arriving at six more London Underground stations

  • 137 stations now online with Virgin Media’s WiFi service

Virgin Media will connect another six London Underground stations to its powerful network tomorrow, enabling passengers to enjoy WiFi throughout the ticket halls and right down onto the platforms at Golders Green, Southgate, West Kensington, Parsons Green, Kilburn and East Putney stations.

The six new stations will bring the total number of connected London Underground stations to 1371with a more due to be added to the network by the end of the Summer.

More than 800,000 devices are currently registered to Virgin Media’s WiFi on London Underground service, with the superfast connectivity enabling an average of one million emails, web pages, Tweets and Facebook posts to be sent underground every weekday.

Joe Lathan, director of broadband at Virgin Media said: “Virgin Media’s WiFi on the London Underground has been a huge success with Londoners and visitors alike so we’re delighted to be connecting even more people in more places. We’re working with TfL and our wholesale partners to deliver a fantastic experience across the capital and make catching up on emails, checking for travel updates or sending a Tweet easier than ever before.”  

Traffic from BlackBerry devices has doubled over the past year, as commuters check emails and stay in touch on the way to and from work. As more passengers get online underground, the gap between iOS and Android usage on the network is narrowing, with 65% of web page views coming from iOS devices and 30% from Android devices, compared to a 74% to 20% split a year ago.

Wholesale deals with EE, O2 and Vodafone mean the majority of Londoners can connect to the Virgin Media powered service at no extra cost2. All Tube passengers are able to keep up-to-date with TfL travel information and quality London entertainment and news for free through Virgin Media’s WiFi portal. Virgin Media also offers a Pay As You Go service with daily, weekly and monthly passes3, giving Tube passengers lots of ways to get online underground.
