Behind the numbers in 2014: Gender equality

Target:
Increase the percentage of women in senior leadership roles (defined as A and B levels) to 25% by the end of 2014 (carried over from 2013).

How we did:
29% of senior leadership roles were held by women in 2014.
We surpassed our target by 4%, with 29% of director level positions being held by women. Within this, our top level Executive Committee of 8 people had 3 women on it in 2014, meaning 38% of our most senior decision-making body was female. This is an increase of 11% on the year before.

The detail:
As part of our commitment to gender balance at the top of our business, March 2014 saw 12 of our female directors joining a group of 60 senior women across Liberty Global at the Liberty Global ‘Look Upwards’ conference in Denver to kick off a global programme for gender diversity. The group recognised the importance and benefits of a female presence in senior management positions, and is working to make sure those already in senior leadership positions can act as role models and mentors.

2014 was also a strong year for gender equality across the rest of our business. For example, we had our highest proportion of female graduates ever at 53% – an increase of 13% since our 2012 intake.

Gender balance remains an important focus area, but at Virgin Media we also want to champion the other important aspects of diversity, including sexual orientation, visible and invisible diversity and ethnicity. That’s why we decided in 2014 that workplace culture and inclusion should be one of our top five strategic people priorities. Once this decision was made we created a new senior role of Head of Culture and Inclusion, to help accelerate progress and broaden the agenda.
