For those of us who use Facebook, nothing can be more interesting, more heart-wrenching and more irritating all at the same time.
Facebook isn’t the saviour of the internet hardcore ‘Facebookies’, would have you believe. To a lot of us, it’s just a pale reminder of the people we’re meant to be friends with having a lot more fun than us. Here’s what really gets our goat with the World’s most popular digital social circle.Nosey relatives
“Oh my head! What an excellent party that was last night but I’ll be damned if I can remember what I got up to. I’ll just check Facebook and… NOOOO! My mum can see these!”
What starts off as the easiest way to stay in touch since the telephone winds up as a confession page to your parents. Extra curricular activities, hobbies, habits; suddenly your midnight toga conga with police intervention doesn’t seem like such a blast.
Ex partners
From the love of your life, the one to share all your favourite pictures and pop-culture references with turns to the one person never to have any kind of contact with in any way what so ever.
So what happens when they find you on Facebook? If you’re really unlucky they’ll send you a friend request. If you’re very lucky you’ll find them instead and spend ages pouring over their new life and feeling a bit miserable. Oh, Facebook.
Status updatesWhen you phone your friend up for a chat, them telling you how they’re feeling is exactly what you want to hear. Them telling you how they’re feeling three times a day perhaps isn’t. Whereas, all your friends telling everyone how they feel falls deep into the category of ‘about to give up caring’.
So why do you do it too? If anything, status updates remind us that everyone worries about the same things. We just don’t really need to hear about it. All the time.
Your friends are having more fun that you
On checking Facebook’s main page, you’ll see a list of all the things your friends have been doing, thinking, saying, playing and watching over the last week. Frankly, who cares?
Well, you do, of course. You care so much you want to shed a tear because they didn’t invite you. FOMO, or fear of missing out, is common amongst Facebook users. So remember, the next time you’re going to have a party, invite some of your Facebook friends and make sure they end up in your wacky ‘look at the fun we had’ pictures.
