Internet Explorer 7 – What you need to know

What is happening?

Microsoft has just released the new version of their Internet Explorer software (version 7), which is the tool that most customers use to browse the Internet. Internet Explorer is the only browser that Virgin Media currently supports.

More information about the software release can be found at the Microsoft website at:

http://www.microsoft.com/windows/ie/

How do I get the new version of Internet Explorer?

If you wish to, you can download it from the website above.

However, if you are a Windows update user, which we recommend all customers use in order to get the latest security patches and performance updates for your Windows computer, you will get automatically upgraded to the new version by Microsoft in the coming weeks.

More information on Windows update can be found at:

http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com

What changes with the new software?

Microsoft has explained this on their website, where you can take a tour and see all the new features. Find this at:

http://www.microsoft.com/windows/ie/"

Do Virgin Media support the new software?

Yes, technical support do now offer support for Internet Explorer 7.

Are there any issues with using the new software on Virgin Media?

The following issues have been identified and we are working on fixing at present.

Broadband Installation:

We recommend that customers do not use Internet Explorer 7 when doing an install or a re-install of their broadband connection and use Internet Explorer 6 at present.

Email icon is missing: you may not be able to see the email icon use to open Outlook Express on the IE7 tool bar, to restore this to right in the grey toolbar, select Customize Command Bar, see Add and Remove command, select Read Mail and click on Add.

Toolbar with the File, Edit and Tools options is not visible: To make this visible, right click in the Grey toolbar and tick Menu Bar.

You are sent to http://runonce.msn.com/runonce2.aspx instead your chosen homepage: This will happen until you select a default search engine.

To uninstall Internet Explorer 7 to return to Internet Explorer 6 on Windows XP

1. Click "Start," and then click "Control Panel."
2. Click "Add or Remove Programs."
3. Check "Show Updates" at the top of the dialog box.
4. Scroll down the list and highlight the version of Internet Explorer 7 that you are running, and then click "Change/Remove."

Automatic Updates installation process

Automatic Updates will first notify you when Internet Explorer 7 is ready to install and then show a welcome screen that presents key features and the choice to accept, decline or postpone installation. Alternately, you will be able to visit the Windows Update or
Microsoft Update sites and obtain Internet Explorer 7 by performing an "Express" scan for high-priority updates.

Upgrading will preserve your current home page, search settings, favourites, and compatible toolbars and will not change your default browser. You will be able to roll back to Internet Explorer 6 at any point by using the Add/Remove Programs utility in the Windows Control Panel.

Microsoft security site.)
