When it comes to cringe-worthy comedy, we’d be hard pressed to find something better than The Office. It may only have run for a couple of seasons, but it made a lasting impression. So where are the stars of the show now? Let’s find out.
The appalling lack of self-awareness. The excruciatingly embarrassing behaviour. The inappropriate jokes. The utter pomposity. And those terrible catchphrases. David Brent was a true comedy legend, made all the funnier because we all know someone just a little bit like him...
The Office sent Ricky Gervais' career into the stratosphere. He went on to co-write and co-direct Extras, with cameos from everyone from Les Dennis to Kate Winslet. He also wrote a series of children's books and become a Hollywood star with films like Ghost Town and Cemetery Junction. Good on ya Brenty!
One of Wernham Hogg's team leaders and a regular in the Territorial Army, Gareth took his job very seriously, getting riled whenever Tim played practical jokes on him. Remember when Tim buried Gareth's sacred stapler in jelly? Classic!
Mackenzie Crook won a whole new legion of fans with his role as pirate Ragetti in the Pirates of the Caribbean movies. He's since appeared in numerous films and TV shows and regularly treads the boards in London's West End. He currently lives in Peter Sellers’ old house.
We can’t help but feel for poor Tim. He never got quite what he wanted. For instance, he really wanted to return to university after dropping out, but soon became trapped in his role as a Wernham Hogg sales rep. He was also deeply in love with receptionist Dawn but was constantly thwarted by her relationship with Lee. Thankfully, in the Christmas special episode Tim finally got his girl, so it wasn’t all bad!
As if we even need to say! Martin Freeman has done amazingly well since his stint as Tim. He appeared in Love Actually, the BBC’s Sherlock Holmes, starred in The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy, and was even Bilbo Baggins in The Hobbit! We honestly didn’t see that coming when he was putting staplers into jelly…
When she wasn't taking the mick out of Gareth or flirting with Tim, Dawn spent most of her time slumped over the reception desk at Wernham Hogg. Frequently having to brush off David Brent's borderline sexual harassment, Dawn was also engaged to the ape-like Lee, who suggested that Dawn could become a cleaner. Quite the catch there Dawn!
Lucy Davis (who is comedian Jasper Carrott's daughter - who'd have thought it?) headed to America after The Office. She’s had a few bit parts in Ugly Betty and The Mentalist, but she’s still waiting to break in to the A-list. We hope things pick up soon for our favourite receptionist.
Finchy! The, moustachioed salesman thought he was a charming ladies’ man with a rich, witty repertoire. In fact he was a nasty, bitter man, sexist in the extreme and vulgar to boot. Needless to say, David Brent loved him. His finest moment? Losing the office quiz, getting angry and throwing Tim's shoes over a building to show his true manliness. Truly the most alpha of males.
Former teacher Ralph Ineson is one of those British actors who turn up everywhere, but whose name no one ever really remembers. He's appeared in everything from Corrie to Spooks, does countless advert voiceovers and has appeared in two Harry Potter movies. Don’t worry Ralph, we remember you!
Lee (pictured at the back there) worked in the company's warehouse and was engaged to receptionist Dawn. She agreed to marry him after this impressive proposal - a newspaper ad that stated "Lee love Dawn. Marriage?" Quite impressive. A big lad, he knew Tim was in love with Dawn, and enjoyed using his physical presence to intimidate our favourite underdog.
Joel Beckett is a classic British actor. Not in the Shakespearean sense, but definitely in the soap sense. In fact he's appeared in almost every TV drama going. The Bill, Casualty, Doctors, Heartbeat… You name it, Joel’s been in it. After The Office he also found fame playing Jake Moon in EastEnders, but his tenure in the Square didn't last long.
Neil ran the Swindon branch of Wernham Hogg, but when they merged with David Brent's Slough office he became David's boss. Neil was everything David wasn't - handsome, suave, clever, popular... As a result, David hated him. Neil's most famous moment was dancing with Rachel on charity day, which lead to one of the funniest comedy sketches ever seen - David Brent doing his own, special dance. Unforgettable.
Actor Patrick Baladi has popped up in everything from Silent Witness to No Heroics. He also played Dodi Al-Fayad in a TV doc about Lady Diana. Married with one daughter, Baladi is also a staunch vegan and has appeared in anti-meat adverts with Pamela Anderson. So Neil’s even a nice guy in real life!
Big Keith was a fan of Scotch eggs. He was also faintly disturbing and creepy towards women. Keith's finest moment was dressing as Ali G for a charity day - oh, and his appraisal, when he put 'eczema' as his main weakness.
Ewen Macintosh has quietly plugged away at the British TV comedy scene for years, with roles in Little Britain, Miranda and Lead Balloon. He still tends to use the deadpan, monotone delivery which made him such a popular character in The Office. Ewen is also part of a four-man comedy team called Navelgazing, which is currently developing ideas for telly shows. Exciting!
David Brent called Jennifer Taylor-Clarke 'Camilla Parker Bowles', but never to her face. She was far too scary for that. Jennifer was David's boss and found his unusual and childish behaviour completely bewildering. Towards the end of series two Jennifer and Neil decided to make David redundant - leading to one of the most hilarious and heart-wrenchingly sad comedy scenes ever seen on TV.
Actress Stirling Gallacher headed from The Office to the doctor's surgery where she played Dr Georgina in BBC daytime drama Doctors. She's also appeared in Little Britain, Casualty and Holby City. She has two sons, one called Ulysses (we love that name), and is married to her Doctor's co-star, Seán Gleeson.
Rachel appeared at Wernham Hogg in series two, when the Slough and Swindon offices merged. She immediately fell for Tim, much to Dawn's dismay and Gareth's chagrin. Gareth confronted the pair when they were kissing then later told Rachel there was no way he'd accept Tim's 'sloppy seconds'... Eurgh Gareth, you sure are gross!
Once again The Office has proved to be a springboard for actors to head to Holby City and Doctors. Actress Stacey Roca has appeared in both shows, as well as Merseybeat, Waking The Dead and Strictly Confidential. Most recently she appeared in the Will Mellor comedy White Van Man. No doubt we'll see her in EastEnders or Corrie soon.
