Until the night of 12 June 1994, OJ Simpson was the all-American hero who had it all: an NFL legend who had carved a career in Hollywood and had a string of multimillion ad deals to boot. But then his ex-wife, Nicole Brown Simpson, and her friend Ron Goldman were found stabbed at her LA home. Simpson was charged with the murder, setting in motion the most publicised criminal trial in US history – a real-life courtroom drama that John Grisham himself would’ve struggled to make up. It both transfixed and divided the nation, and made global stars of all its protagonists.

After 250 days of hearings, the trial finally ended with Simpson’s acquittal, as more than 150 million people tuned in to watch the verdict. Now, coming to BBC Two and starring Cuba Gooding Jr, John Travolta and David Schwimmer, The People v O.J. Simpson: American Crime Story is a 10-part series exploring the chaos that engulfed the trial both inside and outside the courthouse, and how a blend of the prosecution’s excessive self-confidence, the defence’s cunning and allegations of institutional police racism gave the jury what they needed: reasonable doubt.

Remind yourself of the key players…

About Simpson: After retiring from American football as the sport’s highest-paid player in 1979, the charismatic Simpson went on to act in Hollywood films, including the Naked Gun series. But when he was accused of murdering Nicole Brown Simpson and Ron Goldman, his life collapsed in about the most sensational way possible. There was a televised police car chase and a possible suicide note, followed by a complete denial of all the charges. From that day on, he would make headlines for all the wrong reasons.

John Travolta is… Robert Shapiro

About Shapiro: Smooth-talking lawyer to the Hollywood stars who initially led Simpson’s “Dream Team” of defence attorneys. Shapiro was a self-assured master of spin, dropping famous lines like breadcrumbs, but was forced to take a backseat mid-trial after an ego-clash with his team.

Courtney B Vance is… Johnnie Cochran

About Cochran: A silver-tongued defence lawyer whose snappy courtroom speeches were matched only by his colourful suits, he was the Dream Team’s ultimate showman. His punchy closing became one of the most memorable moments of the trial, in which, talking about a leather glove linked to the murders, he uttered the immortal line, “If it does not fit, you must acquit.”

David Schwimmer is… Robert Kardashian

About Kardashian: Another key member of the Dream Team, Kardashian was Simpson’s close friend and confidant. In the immediate wake of the murders, he allowed Simpson to stay at his house and remained by his friend’s side throughout the trial. His children would later become television icons in their own right, as stars of a certain reality TV show.

Sarah Paulson is… Marcia Clark

About Clark: The hard-boiled prosecutor of Simpson’s case, Clark’s no-nonsense cross-examinations were increasingly overshadowed by her image, which came under such intense media scrutiny that she underwent a makeover mid-trial. While her evidence – centred around that bloodstained glove found at Simpson’s home – convinced many Americans of Simpson’s guilt, it failed to persuade the jury.
