It’s that time of year when the American network television axe falls and we have to hope and pray that our favourite shows have escaped the cull. This year, it seems we haven’t been so lucky as ABC announces its decision not to renew many fan favourites.

First up, Marvel’s Agent Carter has been given the no-go for a third series meaning that after the events in Captain America: Civil War, the first lady of S.H.I.E.L.D. has been cancelled twice in one month. The news is particularly galling considering the open-ended plot lines we were left with at the end of Season 2. Will they get picked up in Marvel’s Agents Of S.H.I.E.L.D., which has been renewed another year? There’s more sad news for Marvel fans too as the recently announced spin-off show Marvel’s Most Wanted following spies Bobbi and Hunter has been put on (permanent?) hold once again.

Secondly, Castle has officially been canned after eight series. This is surprising news considering all the fuss a few weeks ago concerning the dumping of star Stana Katic with the intention of continuing on solo with lead actor Nathan Fillion – news that outraged fans.

Other shows to get culled include Nashville, which will end after its current fourth season, The Muppets which closes with just one season to its name, and CSI: Cyber, ending after just two seasons. The list of cancelled shows is rounded out with: Bordertown, Containment, Cooper Barrett’s Guide To Surviving Life, The Family, Galavant, Grandfathered and The Grinder.

There’s some good news elsewhere though. Following budget concerns from channel CBS, Supergirl has been picked up for a second season on CW instead, which is the home of The Flash, Arrow and DC’s Legends Of Tomorrow. This should mean that we can expect more crossovers across all properties going forward, which can only lead to even more awesomeness.
