Blockbuster season is exploding all around us. Franchises featuring your favourite A-list actors and actresses are battling it out at the box office for billion dollar returns. But as the galaxy is guarded again, and the fast get even more furious, spare a thought for the other guys. The unsung hidden gem heroes must not be forgotten at a time when they could easily be overlooked. So with that in mind, here are the best Hidden Gems on Virgin Movies this May.

I.T

It’s hard to resist Pierce Brosnan when he clicks into loud, OTT action-thriller mode. Playing a successful businessman whose state-of-the-art home is taken over by a deranged hacker, we can all agree that this one has all the ingredients for a classic-Brosnan thrill-em-up.

I.T is available from Virgin Movies from Monday 1st May

A Monster Calls

Based on the beloved novel by Patrick Ness, and starring Felicity Jones, Sigourney Weaver and Liam Neeson (as a brilliantly realised tree monster), this is a unique an exceptionally well made film. Word of warning – this is an extremely moving movie that will have you bawling your eyes out, but if you have the tissues ready, you’ll be all set for a truly emotional journey.

A Monster Calls is available from Virgin Movies from Monday 8th May

Nina

The true story of iconic musician and activist Nina Simone is powerful and moving stuff. Zoe Saldana in the titular role shines, but she is ably supported by David Oyelowo, and deftly directed by first time director Cynthia Mort.

Nina is available from Virgin Movies from Monday 8th May

Silence

A project that director Martin Scorsese developed for over twenty five years, Silence is truly his passion production. Based on a novel by Shusaku Endo, this film is epic, lavish and brutally powerful. Andrew Garfield and Adam Driver excel in the starring roles, but Scorsese’s direction remains as tight as ever.

Silence is available from Virgin Movies from Monday 8th May

Live By Night

Produced, written, directed by and starring Ben Affleck, Live By Night is clearly a film that the multi-talented Oscar-winner was extremely passionate about. While the 1920s gangster story underperformed at the box office, it is a well-made, star-studded affair with more than enough style and substance to entertain.

Live By Night is available from Virgin Movies from Monday 22nd May

McLaren

While not exactly well-known outside of motor racing circles, Bruce McLaren is a worthy documentary subject. From humble beginnings the New Zealander founder the McLaren racing team, one of the most iconic, cherished, and well-known in the history of the sport. This doc tells his genuinely fascinating story.

McLaren is available from Virgin Movies from Monday 29th May

Rings

If truth be told, this third addition to the Ring franchise isn’t the strongest in the saga. But in terms of scares it does deliver, and the addition of Vincent D’Onofrio was an inspired move. Think of this as a horror guilty pleasure and you’ll definitely have fun.

McLaren is available from Virgin Movies from Monday 29th May

The Salesman

A hit at Cannes, nominated for a Golden Globe, and the winner of the Foreign Language Award at this year’s Oscars, The Salesman is definitely the real deal. From Asghar Farhadi, the director of previous Oscar-winner A Separation, this is a masterfully told mystery that will have you on the edge of your seat.

The Salesman is available from Virgin Movies from Monday 29th May

Toni Erdmann

Eccentric, dark, funny, and definitely a bit odd, this near three-hour German comedy could be considered a tough sell. But, not only was this slice of unique Bavarian comedy nominated for a Golden Globe, BAFTA and an Oscar, it has a 7.6 rating on IMDB, and a 92% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Enough said.

Toni Erdmann is available from Virgin Movies from Monday 29th May
