Sony hope the PS2's success in Europe will boost the PS3
Perhaps the most worrying aspect for Sony is that the sales figures could dissuade third party games suppliers from making the huge investments required to develop PS3 titles.
It is estimated that a game would needed to clear a staggering 500,000 sales before it breaks even.
Sony will be hoping that its fortunes will change with the passage of time and the corporation should get a clearer indication of its success next Christmas, by which time a wider library of titles will be on offer and the significance of the in-built Blu-Ray player becomes more established in the eyes of the consumer.
"Sony will be buoyed by the continuing success of the PS2 which sold an amazing 11 million units last year."
The PS3 will be given a European launch in the spring, and this will be a good indicator of brand loyalty in a region where the PS2 is king.
Meanwhile Sony will be buoyed by the continuing success of the PS2 which sold an amazing 11 million units last year, far outpacing its next generation rivals. If only that success could rub onto the PS3.
