Xbox 360 triumphs in Xmas console wars

Console wars

This Christmas, the PS3, Xbox 360 and Wii went to war.

As expected, the Nintendo Wii and the Xbox 360 have come out winners after a busy Christmas in the games console market, whilst Sony's Playstation 3 has struggled to keep up with its next-generation rivals.

Since its launch in December, the Wii has shifted of 4 million units and the figures would be even higher if stocks hadn't run dry.

The Xbox 360, which had a year's head start over its next-generation rivals, had over 2 million festive sales in the US alone, surpassing that of even the Nintendo Wii.

"In Japan, the PS3 is being outstripped by the Wii by almost three to one."

Part of the success can be attributed to the release of the superb 'Gears of War' title as well as other games which are at last realising the powerful capabilities of Microsoft's console.

Supply problems, high prices and a lack of killer launch titles have contrived to keep sales of the PS3 down to the relatively poor Stateside total of 750,000 units.

Even in its native Japan, the PS3 is being outstripped by the Wii by almost three to one.
