As you defeat them during the game you can also recruit Espers as special magical super weapons which can be summoned to fight alongside you and then perform one of the gorgeously animated magical attacks for which the series is justly famous.
The other major special move open to characters is a variation of the traditional "limit break" which allows each character to perform their own special moves when their magical power bar is at full.
The catch in the new game is that you must now chain the attacks with other characters to do any real damage.

Although the magic system is not greatly changed from previous games there are now no pre-determined character classes or jobs for you to choose from, with the game allowing you to customise your character however you want using a two-pronged "license" system.
By gaining experience from defeating enemies you can spend license points on unlocking abilities, from using different weapons to mastering spells.
As long as you then buy the relevant weapon or magic spell from a shop it's then yours to use as you please.
