Number 12 is the best so far
Final Fantasy XII is not only the best game in the series so far but also easily the most accessible.
Its nuances are still complex but the basic combat and storyline should be far less daunting to those put off by the peculiarities of the previous games.
It's also one of the very last exclusive titles for the PlayStation 2, with the next core game in the series currently being developed for the PlayStation 3.
"Final Fantasy XII is not only the best game in the series so far but also easily the most accessible."
With a Final Fantasy XII prequel due on the Nintendo DS, Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII on the PSP and a multiplayer sequel to Final Fantasy: Crystal Chronicles on the Wii you can be sure there'll never be a final Final Fantasy.
Although initially closely associated with Nintendo formats the Final Fantasy series is now one of the PlayStation's most important exclusive franchises.
If you want to catch up with the earlier games though they're almost all now available for the Game Boy Advance/Nintendo DS (the latter being backwards compatible with the former).
In fact the only entries that may be difficult to get hold of at the moment are the earlier PS one titles, which can fetch an obsessive collector's ransom now, for a mint copy in the original box.
