360 leads the next-gen driving revolution

Forza Motorsport 2

Forza 2 sets a new standard

Atari's increasingly platform promiscuous Test Drive Unlimited (now available on Xbox 360, PS2, PC and PSP) blends driving with Massively Multi-Player Online Games to give you the island of Oahu populated by other players equally in the mood to burn rubber; an alluring offering.

But what of this year's crop? The two driving game standouts coming in 2007's line-up are undoubtedly DiRT and Forza Motorsport 2.

DiRT is the latest incarnation of the incredibly reliable Colin McRae Rally series.

Since leaving team Subaru our Colin's not exactly the star he once was, so along with a name change, DiRT also refocuses the game on the bit everyone really cared about, namely tearing from A to B along muddy, gravel-strewn, snowy, wet or just plain old tarmac roads as fast as you possibly can.

This version promises spectacularly detailed car and driving models, as well as a decent splattering of its titular muck.

By contrast Forza Motorsport 2 is a more sober (and distinctly Gran Turismo-styled) racer that offers you the chance to drive the thick end of 300 different car models, whilst springing for new rides and upgrades with the money you earn winning races.

Staunchly refusing to 'reinvent the wheel' [you're fired - ed] Forza 2 looks like a deep if staid addition to Xbox 360's growing roster for petrol heads.
