Check your Vista PC for automatic IP addressing

To check that your Vista PC is set up to obtain an IP address automatically:

  1. From your desktop, click on Start and then click on Control Panel. The following window displays:




  2. Click on Network and Sharing Center.



    The Network and Sharing Center screen displays.
  3. In the Tasks column on the left, click on Manage network connections.



  4. Locate the LAN connection, and right click on the icon to display a sub-menu. Select Properties from the sub menu.




  5. From the Networking tab, click on Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IPv4), and make sure the checkbox is checked. Click on Properties.



    The Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IPv4) Properties window displays.
  6. Make sure that both Obtain an IP address automatically and Obtain DNS server address automatically are selected, as shown below:



    If either is not selected, click in the circle to insert the green dot.
  7. Click on OK to return to the Networking tab. Click on OK again to exit.

That's it! Your PC is set up to obtain an IP address automatically.
