Access settings

To set-up your standard freespace service and use it for the first time, simply login to Selfcare and follow the steps.

The upload information for your site is as follows:

  • Hostname: upload.virgin.net
  • Username: your.username
  • Password: your Virgin Media password

All customers have up to 16MB of filespace on our servers to use with their new account.

When you opened your Virgin Media account, you were given a web page address that links to your 16MB of Freespace. If you type in this address now you will see the default index page that has been created for you to use:

http://freespace.virgin.net/your.username/index.htm

Remember to change your.username for your REAL user name! Let's take the example of w.shakespeare@virgin.net. He would type this:

http://freespace.virgin.net/w.shakespeare/index.htm

You can use Microsoft FrontPage to upload to your freespace, or you can use a simple FTP client, such as WS-FTP (available at www.ipswitchft.com). You can also have full use of the additional functionality offered by the Microsoft FrontPage Server Extensions on our service, up to and including FrontPage 2002.

Note: You cannot create a site based on an alias with an underscore or a full stop in it, as these are invalid characters in DNS. You cannot create a site based on an alias with a hyphen ("-") either.

If you wish your Web site to be able to be viewed without users needing to put a filename on the end of the address, ie:

http://freespace.virgin.net

instead of:

http://freespace.virgin.net/henry.smith/index.htm

You will need to call your initial (home) page index.htm

When your freespace is set up, a default.htm file is created automatically. You may wish to overwrite this file with your own file, or just to remove it in order for your own pages to be viewable. You should be able to delete or overwrite this file using any FTP program, or if you call your home page index.html in FrontPage you can just overwrite it.

Changing your password

If you need to change (or have forgotten) your password, you can return to the web area of Selfcare section of our website and just set a new one. The username and password you should use when logging on is the same that you use to collect your e-mail.
