Importing contacts
You can import address books from Outlook, Hotmail, Yahoo!, orkut, and other services into Virgin Media Mail. Importing your contacts isn't difficult, but it does take a few steps.
First, you'll need to format your contacts as a CSV file -- often times, address books exported from other mail providers are already formatted as CSV files. You can also create your own CSV file.
Once you have a CSV file with all your contacts' information, you can import the file and transfer your contacts to Virgin Media Mail. Note that you can only import up to 3000 contacts at a time. If you have more than 3000 contacts, you'll need to create multiple CSV files to upload.
Importing CSV files
To import contacts to Virgin Media Mail :
- Create a custom CSV file, or export the address book from your other webmail provider or email client as a CSV file.
- Log in to Virgin Media Mail.
- Click Contacts on the left side of any Virgin Media Mail page.
- Click Import in the bottom-left corner.
- Click Browse... and locate the CSV file you'd like to upload.
- Select the file and click Import.
Once you've successfully uploaded the document, Virgin Media Mail will display the number of contacts imported.
A few things to keep in mind:
- If some entries aren't included in your Contacts list, Virgin Media Mail tells you why these entries were left out.
- If you receive error messages when attempting to import your contacts, you may need to edit your CSV file.
Exporting Virgin Media Mail contacts
You can quickly export your Virgin Media Mail Contacts list into a CSV file. Here's how:
- Log in to your Virgin Media Mail account.
- Click Contacts along the left side of any Virgin Media Mail page.
- Click Export in the lower-left corner of your Contacts list.
- Choose whether to export all contacts or only one group.
- Select the format in which you'd like to export your contacts' information.
- Click Export.
- Choose Save to Disk then click OK.
- Select a location to save your file, and click 'OK.'
Depending on the requirements of the program to which you're importing your contacts, you can easily edit this CSV to fit your needs.
At the moment, contact exports will not include group information. This is a known issue, and we appreciate your patience as our engineers work to resolve it.
Creating or editing CSV files
Spreadsheet programs like Microsoft Excel make it easy to create and edit CSV files.
Your CSV file should be formatted as a table and must include a header, or first line, that defines the fields in your table. Virgin Media Mail accepts many common header fields (name, email address, birthday, etc.). If you're updating an existing file, you probably won't need to change your header field names; if you're creating a new file and need some guidance, you can use any of the field names used in the examples below.

Here are some additional things to keep in mind as you create your file:
- The file must include a field for the email address.
- The Name field can be a single column, like this:
If you'd rather, you can also use separate fields for the first, middle, and last names, like this:
|
|
| first name |
middle name |
last name |
| Richard |
|
Branson |
|
- Fields can be listed in any order.
Here's an example of a sample file that can be created using Microsoft Excel:
|
|
|
First Name
|
Last Name
|
Email Address
|
Street Address
|
Phone
|
|
Richard
|
Branson
|
richardbranson@virginmedia.com
|
160 Great Portland St, London W1
|
0845 840 7777
|
|
By saving this table as a .csv file, and importing it in to Virgin Media Mail, one entry – for Jane Doe – is added to your Contacts list.
Once you've entered all of your contacts into a table, save the document and select CSV (Comma delimited) (*.csv) as the type of file you'd like to save. If prompted to verify your selection, click Yes or OK.
For still more information about CSV files, open Help in Excel.
Once you've saved the file, you're ready to import your CSV file to Virgin Media Mail .
