Typing an address in the URL bar
To view web pages on the internet you will need a web browser, like Microsoft Internet Explorer or Netscape. This software is usually provided by your Internet Service Provider.
Every web page has a unique address known as a uniform resource locator, or URL. The URL appears in the address box at the top of your browser and normally begins http://www.
If you already know the address of the web page you want to access, then you can type it in to the address box and click on the 'Go' button. To reach ntlworld.com for example, you would type in the following address: http://www.ntlworld.com.

It will normally take a few seconds for a page to load. While it loads, an icon will spin in the top right hand corner of your browser. At the same time, the grey status bar at the bottom of your browser will display the message opening page and proceed to count down the number of items still to download.

Once a page is fully loaded, the status bar will read done and the icon will stop spinning. The title of the page will also be displayed in the bar at the top of your browser. In the case of ntlworld.com it says 'ntlworld.com - dial up and broadband website from ntl'.
