Making dad cool

If you love your dad but despair of his taste, follow our simple guide to making your dad cooler.

Suggest he invests in something featured below - or treat him for Father's Day - and he'll get a name as a trendsetter in no time.

Books Mark Haddon, author of the widely-loved novel The Curious Incident Of The Dog In The Night-time, last year brought out A Spot Of Bother (Jonathan Cape paperback available from June), which deals with topics of retirement, mental health, infidelity and family life in a funny and sometimes confrontational style.

If he isn't too easily shocked, you could also try DBC Pierre's recent novel Ludmilla's Broken English (Faber & Faber) - a story of conjoined twins and Russian brides which is hilarious, sleazy and gruesome, but always compelling.

Also worthy of note is Zoe Heller's Notes On A Scandal (Penguin), recently turned into a movie starring Judi Dench - it's gripping, pacey and relentless.

CDs Swedish singer-songwriter Salem Al-Fakir has released an album entitled This Is Who I Am, drawing favourable comparisons with Cat Stevens, with a unique brand of cool to set him aside from the rest of the crowd. Stevens himself - now recording under the name Yusuf - recently brought out a collection album of heartfelt songs which was also well-received and, while not being so different from his classic recordings to scare off old fans, sounds really fresh.

If Dad's a country music fan, he may be interested in Willy Mason - the young American singer whose voice and mature songs belie his tender age - or even Thirteen Songs, an album recorded a couple of years back by veteran singer Neil Diamond, working in conjunction with uber-cool producer Rick Rubin.
