After 34 years, cello scrotum, an ailment allegedly felt by cello players whose instrument rubbed against their nether regions, has been revealed as a hoax. Inspired by the ‘guitarist’s nipple’ condition, a junior doctor made up the complaint in 1974.

In 1974, Dr Curtis famously sent a letter to the BMJ (British Medical Journal) mentioning a skin irritation he had seen among classical guitarists. After many hours with the instrument against their chests, the musicians developed a rash he dubbed ‘guitarist's nipple’.
