Paint a wall

Painting a room can be as easy as pie if you follow a few simple steps and pieces of advice...

  1. Prepare your walls first. Rub them down, sanding if necessary. If you have wood to paint, ensure that you wash it down with sugar soap. If the walls have been painted before, they are fine without primer, but if they're freshly plastered they will need a coat of this.
  2. Remove light switch covers and mask door frames, skirting board, switches, plugs, window frames and so on with masking tape and, if necessary, newspaper.
  3. Cover the floor.
  4. Apply paint using roller and brushes. Two coats of emulsion will be sufficient for most walls, even plastered ones which have been coated with primer.
