Paddington Bear turns 50
Fifty years ago today, on 13th October 1958 "A Bear Called Paddington" was first published. Written by Michael Bond, Paddington was inspired by a lone teddy bear on a shelf in a shop near Paddington Station on Christmas Eve in 1956. Michael Bond then went onto create the character Paddington Bear, an immigrant from Darkest Peru, found in Paddington station with his battered suitcase and a pile of marmalade sandwiches.
Paddington Bear was recently named one of the top children’s book heroes by TV channel Nick Jr. We take a look at other book heroes – and villains.
