Eighth riskiest region
The floods in Cumbria this week deluged up to 1,000 homes and caused carnage totalling £100m, but sadly this is just another chapter in Britain’s on-going soggy saga. Research shows one in six homes are now at significant risk of flooding and that 900,000 homes will be under threat by 2035. So where will the next flood occur? We reveal the areas most at risk, according to the Environment Agency.
No.8: Warrington, Cheshire
Homes at ‘significant risk’: 6,533
Flooded recently? Warrington on the River Mersey should be a flooding hotspot but for a lucky piece of 18th century engineering which keeps it dry even during the worst downpours.
Why here? In 1734 a canal was dug connecting Manchester to the Irish Sea and one unintended effect was to offer flood relief to Warrington. When it rains upstream water is re-routed from the Mersey into the 34-mile long canal – but increasingly even this may not be enough.
