It took the Chancellor just over an hour to deliver the 2010 budget and when it came there were no big surprises, generous tax cuts or giveaways on offer.
While 'prudence' was once the order of the day, Alistair Darling referred to his third Budget, and his last before the election, as a 'sensible' one, claiming he wasn’t about to jeopardize the country’s recovery by splashing the cash. So what are this year's changes and how do they affect the pound in your pocket?
Wine, beer, cider and spirits are going up and with the increase in tobacco duty smokers are likely to find they’re paying more on a pack of cigarettes.
Duty on beer, wine and spirits goes up by 2 per cent from midnight on Sunday and another 2 per cent a year until 2013.
But cider gets a heftier price increase, going up by 10 per cent above the rate of inflation at the same time. And tobacco duty will rise by 1 per cent above inflation from today.
