Kiwi isn’t a great name for a car but that was apparently the one first proposed for what became the Esprit, Lotus sensibly deciding to continue with its policy of monikers beginning with ‘E’.
First shown as an Italdesign study at the 1972 Turin Motor Show, it was four years before the car went into production.
An early example of Giorgetto Giugiaro’s ‘folded paper’ design language, the Esprit was a stunningly simple design with no scoops or spoilers to distract from its clean lines.
