Top ten animated movies

As Tim Burton's animated Corpse Bride opens in cinemas nationwide, we run down our choices for the other movies no self-respecting animation addict should ever be without...

Bambi (1942)

Any one of Disney's early classics could have made this list, but we've chosen this because it's pretty much flawless. Beautifully animated and bursting with memorable characters, it's also deeply moving - not least in the scene where Bambi's mum falls prey to a heartless hunter's bullet.

Beauty And The Beast (1991)

The first animated feature to be nominated for the best picture Oscar, and the primary reason why full-length toons now have their own Academy Award. The secret of its success is it works just as well as a musical, as its subsequent transformation into a hit Broadway and West End show proved.

Wallace & Gromit: The Curse Of The Were-Rabbit (2005)

Wallace & Gromit's first feature-length film shows the magic of Nick Park's Oscar-winning claymation shorts could transfer to the big screen with their charm and quintessential Britishness intact. Years in the making, the attention to detail is as astonishing as it is frequently hilarious, with every minute of this action-packed plasticine comedy a real riot.

Finding Nemo (2003)

The first of three Pixar productions in this list, testament to their complete dominance of computer-generated animation at the moment. As always, though, it's the characters, not the visuals, that make this subterranean adventure such a memorable, touching and endlessly rewatchable experience.

The Incredibles (2004)

Another Pixar masterpiece, thanks in no small part to director Brad Bird (whose 1999 film The Iron Giant only missed a place on this list by a whisker). Great visual slapstick and verbal wit combine in this winning tale of a family of suburban superheroes struggling to deal with anonymity.
