The woman who discovered the body of Hollywood star Heath Ledger has revealed the details of his last moments.

Masseuse Diana Wolozin, who found the actor dead in his New York apartment, made two calls to actress Mary-Kate Olsen from Ledger's mobile phone before calling the emergency services, authorities said.

The therapist told police that she first thought that Ledger was unconscious and had called Olsen, a friend of the Brokeback Mountain star, for advice.

But when she realised that the actor might be dead she rang Olsen once again and then called for an ambulance.

Ledger had six different types of drugs, including sleeping pills and anti-anxiety medication, inside his Manhattan apartment but post-mortem results have so far proved inconclusive, authorities said.

Medical examiners will continue to study Ledger's body to find out exactly how he died but have said it may take up to ten days to get the results.

Police said the Australian star probably died between the time that his housekeeper Teresa Solomon, saw him sleeping and heard him snoring in his room at 1pm, and when Ms Wolozin arrived for her appointment with Ledger at 2.45pm.

Ledger was filming in London last weekend and police sources said three of the six drugs, which included sleeping pills, anti-anxiety tablets and an anti-histamine, were prescribed in Europe.

The pills were found near his body and Ledger recently admitted taking the prescription drug Ambien to combat insomnia.

There are also unconfirmed reports that the actor was suffering from pneumonia at the time of his death.

Mourners have created a makeshift shrine, lighting candles and laying flowers and hand-painted signs next to pictures of the star outside his apartment.

Ledger's former girlfriend Michelle Williams and the couple's two-year-old daughter Matilda Rose returned to their home in the Boerum Hill area of Brooklyn late on Wednesday night.

Williams, who was filming the movie Mammoth on location in Sweden when she heard the news, immediately flew back home to New York with their daughter.

The pair arrived at their house in a black SUV and both were rushed inside by friends and security guards.

Earlier, Ms Williams' father said: "Tennyson got it right in the poem when he described someone as having died at a young age but burning the candles at both ends, and oh what a beautiful flame he made."

Ledger is currently starring in I'm Not There, one of several actors playing a role representing Bob Dylan, and had just finished playing The Joker in the next Batman movie, The Dark Knight.

Ledger's other movie credits included A Knight's Tale, Monster's Ball and 10 Things I Hate About You.
