Rose McGowan "disappears" when the movie industry overwhelms her.
The 'Conan the Barbarian' actress took a three-year hiatus in 2002 and another break in 2008 and admits she hasn't followed a conventional career path because her dislike of Hollywood makes her shy away.
She said: "I don't follow the normal pattern of a career.
"I have a very difficult time when I really start disliking the industry, I just disappear."
Rose's recent hiatus came because she was furious with the promotional campaign for 'Grindhouse' - a double bill of Robert Rodriguez's 'Planet Terror' and Quentin Tarantino's 'Death Proof', both of which she stars in - because it targeted only New York and Los Angeles.
She told Total Film magazine: "New York and Los Angeles are already sold on Tarantino and Rodriguez's movies. Go to Iowa, dummies.
"It was infuriating. It's like having a beautiful baby and kicking it out the window as soon as it's born."
Also contributing to her career break was a huge amount of "family stuff".
She explained: "I went through a big number of deaths. And it knocked the wind out of my sails for a while."
