The Last Kiss
The Last Kiss is a remake of an Italian film, L'Ultimo Bacio, set in Wisconsin and, though Americanised, feels strangely European, concentrating as it does on troubled relationships.
Scrubs star Zach Braff and Jacinda Barrett play Michael and Jenna, a couple who have just found out they are expecting a baby. As they are unmarried, the prospect of union inevitably rears its head, prompting Michael to turn to stone. Annoyed, Anna makes constant desperate cries for attention, asking him "what would you do if I died?" He replies, "I'd iron my dark suit." She moves out.
Michael's friend, Chris (Casey Affleck), isn't faring any better. Harassed by his irritated wife and a constantly screaming baby, he spends most of his time in the bathroom contemplating divorce, while Izzy (Michael Weston) has been dumped by his girlfriend and dreams of travelling to South America by motorbike. As for Kenny (Eric Christian Olsen), he works behind a bar and sleeps with numerous women, none of whom he has any intention of sticking around with.
At the wedding of another friend, Michael meets a student, Kim (Rachel Bilson), with whom he tentatively embarks on a relationship. Why, at the age of 29, he is so wary about bonding with a woman a few years his junior is never quite explained. But then, although The Last Kiss is decently executed, the whole film is swathed in middle-age despair, suggesting that in Wisconsin, if nowhere else on earth, 30 signifies the beginning of the end.
A plethora of bonus footage includes trailers, outtakes, deleted scenes, behind the scenes, commentary (1. Zach Braff & Tony Goldwyn (director) 2. Braff, Goldwyn, Jacinda Barrett, Rachel Bilson, Michael Weston and Eric Christian Olsen (actors).) plus documentaries (Filmmakers Perspective, Getting Together).
