A thoughtful consideration of American life during wartime that avoids polemical analysis in favour of presenting a touching human story with credible integrity. On returning from a military tour of duty, Kelli (Linda Cardellini) is keen to embrace the normality of life with her family and friends in the Ohio community she had been separated from while serving her country. Her experiences of combat are not up for discussion, as Kelli insists that 'nothing happened out there' and that 'others had it much worse', phrases that turn into hollow mantras, as if she's trying to convince herself that she is OK. Gradually, her disaffection with the familiar world takes hold, and her indignation about addressing her situation begins to put a strain on her relationships, principally those with her patient husband, Mike (Michael Shannon) and their young children.
