Brass Construction
It's no exaggeration to say that Brass Construction changed the face of dance music with their blazing horns and incessant rhythms which came to define the funk genre with their 1975 smash hit Movin'. They were the brainchild of Guyana-born singer/keyboard player Randy Muller, who moved to New York as a child and came up with the idea of a modern band built around brass with his schoolfriends Wade Williamson (bass) and Larry Payton (drums). Roping in other friends from West Indian backgrounds, the band started playing locally as the Dynamic Souls, changing their name to Brass Construction after winning a Battle of the Bands contest. It helped land them a deal with United Artists Records and they released their self-titled debut album in 1976. The pulsating track Movin''became an international hit as their fusion of R&B and jazz swept through the disco scene. Other hits such as Ha Cha Cha (Funktion), L.O.V.E U, How Do You Do (What You Do To Me) and Attitudes similarly filled dance floors all over the world and the Brass Construction sound symbolised funk. Muller went on to produce disco group Skyy and arrange strings for B.T. Express ,and even went on to make a classical flute album; while Brass Construction records were in hot demand again during the remix era of the 1990s and the band was still recording and touring throughout the 2000s.
