Lana Del Rey
Exuding an air of glamorous, off-kilter mystery, Lana Del Rey became a huge internet phenomenon in 2011 with her videos Blue Jeans and Video Games setting the music blogs alight with fervour and fury. The daughter of a wealthy internet investor, the New Yorker originally pursued a musical career under her real name Lizzy Grant, but her independently released debut album received little attention and was quickly withdrawn. With the help of The Strokes and Regina Spektor producer David Kahne, her songwriting evolved and she grew into the Lana Del Rey persona - a pouty, sensual being who looks like a floaty femme fatale and croons songs of heartbreak. The media hype accompanying her breakthrough resulted in a sniping backlash in some quarters but it didn't bother her career trajectory - especially since her single Born To Die reached Number 7 in the UK and the album of the same name went on to top the charts in seven countries. Del Rey won a BRIT Award in 2012 for Best International Breakthrough Act. and another in 2013.
