No Doubt

Originally formed at school by Gwen Stefani with her brother Eric using the name Apple Core, the band No Doubt built a keen following around California in the early 1990s, but their ska pop sound failed to break a market swamped with hard rocking grunge bands. Detailing the break-up of Stefani and bassist Tony Kanal's relationship, third album Tragic Kingdom (1995) finally gave the group their break, topping the US charts, selling over 18 million copies worldwide and producing the huge international hit Don't Speak - a US Number 1 for 16 consecutive weeks. Its follow-up, Return of Saturn (2000), reached Number 2 in the US but made little impression, before the swaggering, funky cool of Rock Steady (2001) produced the hits Hey Baby, Hella Good and Underneath It All. No Doubt went into hiatus in 2004 with Stefani pursuing a successful solo career, but they reformed in 2008 to tour with Paramore, Panic! At the Disco and Katy Perry.
