Ringo Starr

"Is Ringo Starr the best drummer in the world?" John Lennon was once asked, "He's not even the best drummer in The Beatles," came the famous response. Yet, there was always something undeniably lovable about the man who droned his way through Yellow Submarine, With A Little Help From My Friends and Octopus' Garden, and became a hugely popular member of the most successful band of all time. After The Beatles split in 1970, Ringo released two solo albums within the year, Sentimental Journey - featuring cover versions of his family's favourite standards - and the country record Beaucoups of Blues But it was third album Ringo (1973) that proved his most successful. Full of big budget pop and with contributions from former bandmates Lennon, McCartney and Harrison, it reached Number 2 in the US and produced the chart topping singles Photograph and You're Sixteen. Oh My My and No No Song also became fairly big hits in the States but by the 1980s Ringo was gaining more attention as the voice of children's TV show Thomas the Tank Engine than he was for his music. He has continued to play regularly with his All Starr Band and in 2010 released his 15th studio album Y Not featuring collaborations with Joss Stone, Ben Harper and Richard Marx.
