Top facts:

  • By switching the perspective from male to female, Franklin transformed Otis Redding's song, Respect, into an anthem for the Sixties' burgeoning feminist movement. The frequently misheard lyric - "Take care, TCB" - refers to "Taking Care of Business", and was ad libbed by Franklin.

  • The album's title track proved to be Franklin's breakthrough single, almost seven years since her first release. The song came about spontaneously: "I took her to church, sat her down at the piano and let her be herself", revealed producer Jerry Wrexler.

  • Franklin isn't the only notable artist to have covered Sam Cooke's civil rights anthem A Change Is Gonna Come - Bob Dylan, The Supremes, Tina Turner and Otis Redding have all performed their own memorable versions.
