The Rolling Stones may feel it is a tad harsh for them to head up this list, as their actual musical performance at this legendarily anarchic Californian free festival elicited no complaints.
However, as the event was marred by the brutal murder of 18-year-old Meredith Hunter by Hells Angels, plus three accidental deaths, and is now synonymous with the death of flower power and the hippie dream, it's difficult to regard it as an unqualified success.
