With the delectable fivesome set to release their new single, Whole Lotta History, on 13th March, we met Girls Aloud to talk Chico, BRIT snubs and reality TV...
VM: Cheryl, Kimberley, Nadine, Nicola, Sarah - hello! How are you all doing today?
Girls Aloud: Good, thanks!
VM: So tell us about this reality TV series you've got coming up later this year.
Sarah: It's an "ob doc", ha ha!
VM: A what doc?
Cheryl: Sorry, it's funny, that's what they call it - an "ob doc", for "observational documentary". We've had cameras following us around for a while, filming a bit of stuff at home, behind the scenes, us hanging out with each other, doing shows, that kind of thing. It's quite up close and personal.
VM: Are you nervous about that level of exposure?
Cheryl: Not really - we have final control actually, we'll approve the final edit. There won't be any nasty surprises for us! But I suppose at the very last stage they can still change things, so you never know...
VM: I've got some questions that your fans have emailed in, so here goes - brace yourselves. Do you ever browse your fan messageboards and forums to see what people are saying about you? (Penny, Winchester)
Cheryl: We do, yeah, we try to. It's important to see what the fans are saying. It is hard though because we don't always have much time, you get home at like 10 at night and you're tired so it's difficult, but we do look. If we haven't got the time our record label people normally look and the opinions of the fans do get through to us one way or the other.
Kimberley: Yeah, we look to see what they thought of the shows, whether they like the new dance moves, that kind of thing! We have a really strong fanbase and their opinions matter to us.
VM: How do you take the negative comments when things get bitchy?
Kimberley: You've got to take the rough with the smooth, really.
Cheryl: I like criticism, you know, it helps us to improve.
VM: Do you stand by the comments you made about last year's X Factor series now that Chico is number one? (Simon, Milton Keynes)
Cheryl: We never said anything, it's ridiculous, I don't know where that came from! That song is s*** though, it's just a novelty track. It really doesn't deserve to be number one.
VM: Were you upset to not receive any BRIT nominations? (Corrina, London)
Cheryl: Yes, very, we were absolutely gutted. I was in tears when we found out, it felt like a total snub. It's all American acts now, but it's the BRITs, it's supposed to be about British music, supporting our artists, so we felt really let down.
Nadine: I didn't watch the show but people have told me it was pretty boring this year.
VM: Very true. If you could be in any other band on the planet apart from Girls Aloud, which would it be? (Matt, Brighton)
Nadine: Destiny's Child, definitely.
Kimberley: The Spice Girls - at their peak I think that would have been really exciting.
Cheryl: I wouldn't want to be in any other bands, honestly, I can't imagine being in any other group. I'd just do something else.
