Captain Beefheart
Otherwise known as Don Van Vliet, Captain Beefheart's musical output combined free jazz, blues and rock (amongst everything else but the kitchen sink) into a kaleidoscopic, surreal and often bewildering melée of noise. But there was method in his madness - his masterpiece, Trout Mask Replica, is frequently cited as one of the most influential and avant-garde of all time.
