Battles - comprised of Helmet and Auf Der Maur drummer John Stanier, guitarists from US math-rockers Don Caballero and Lynx, and multi-instrumentalist and jazz prodigy Tyondai Braxton - have long produced music which manages to be extremely pleasing, and quite staggeringly hard to categorise. The blend of heavy, complex drumming, intricate guitar riffing and layers of feedback, looped vocals and electronic noises eludes easy pigeonholing - post-post-rock, perhaps.

Following last year's EPs and a series of high profile support slots, this first full album on Warp is surprising and coherent. While the elements of unpredictable jazz, heavy grooves and experimental electronic dabbling remain, Mirrored takes the form of a series of tight, funky grooves, much more accessible than their previous work and sure to win them a wider audience. Moments of brilliance and unparalleled musical ability (particularly in the rhythm section) litter this album, which will appeal to existing fans and those who favour electronica, jazz and post-rock alike.
