Charlie Wilson - Charlie Last name Wilson

The former Gap Band frontman bounces back to tip-top form with this slick collection of modern soul songs.

Part of the record's success, beyond Wilson's superb singing, is the number of tunes that have been penned by R Kelly, including the title track, and Kelly's executive production talents. Wilson's voice is perhaps stronger and more powerful than it has ever been, with a rich depth that wasn't nearly as evident on the hits he had with his brothers back in the Eighties when the Gap Band turned out hits like You Dropped A Bomb On Me, and Burn Rubber (Why You Wanna Hurt Me).

Modernity has caught up with Wilson on this record, with arrangements that are an age away from his earlier work - nods to Kelly again. He also works with the Black Eyed Peas' will.i.am and one Justin Timberlake on Floatin'.

For a man who by his own admission has been from "riches to rags", this is a great effort.
