Daft Punk - Human After All

An electronica version of The Knack's My Sharona?! God please no. No, wait a minute; ah, it's the first track of Daft Punk's new album. Phew, that's all right then...

Are Daft Punk the inheritors to Kraftwerk's electro political dance throne? If Devo were around now would this be the sort of thing they'd be doing? Maybe. Still, whatever they do, at least these French chappies retain their sense of humour. Human After All; those guys!

The album is a mixed bag, mainly of treats, but with some tricks thrown in to test you. The metronomic Steam Machine is the record's standout track by a mile - or kilometre - followed closely by the techno-laced Brainwasher, while Robot Rock is a classic rock/electro mash-up which actually works. Television Rules The Nation is as mesmerising and transfixing as the song's subject and Make Love is a melodic hypnotic little number, an oasis in a sea of chirpy white noise; indeed, lest we forget, that one half of Daft Punk, Thomas Bangalter, served up the European dance hit Music Sounds Better With You under the name Stardust a few years back. Other tracks work less well; The Prime Of Your Life is probably meant to be deep, but ends up being an irritating cacophony and has one lunging for the eject button.
