Re-release of much-hyped UK hardcore punk band's debut does its job – but not much more

Even by rock's fickle standards, the rise of Watford five-piece Gallows from local circuit giggers to £1 million major label signings is surprising – especially when you discover the visceral, hardcore punk racket the band peddle. Green Day it ain't.

However, thanks to effusive championing from Kerrang (naturally) and NME (yawn), and a crop of incendiary, committed live performances, Gallows face a hyped-up future beyond their niche scene. Wiry lead singer Frank Carter's shock of ginger hair, startlingly tattooed torso and eye-poppingly passionate performances can only help matters too.

Unfortunately, while much has been made of Carter's supposedly thoughtful lyrics, they're hard to decipher amidst his relentless shouting. This, alongside song titles such as Come Friendly Bombs and I Promise This Won't Hurt, means it's difficult to ascertain how intelligent this band really are. The music, of course, is tight, pounding and unremarkable hardcore fare, with recent single Abandon Ship the standout. Such a lack of light and shade means Orchestra Of Wolves, while noisily satisfying, is a tough listen in one sitting.

Helmet: Strap It On
