Giant Drag - Hearts & Unicorns review

Like the best chefs, sometimes the secret of a band's success is its ability to do a lot with few resources. This homespun psychobabble holds true with Los Angeles duo Giant Drag - guitarist/singer Annie Hardy and drummer Micah Calabrese - who have cooked up a storm with this debut effort.

Blending the best bits of PJ Harvey and the Pixies with their own brand of stripped back indie pop, GD weave wonderfully simple hooks and riffs into tunes that compel you to hum them hours after just the first listen. One such song is This Isn't It, while YFLMD merely repeats the trick, simply but hypnotically wrapping you up in its dark loveliness.

The UK version of the album contains a pared back version of Chris Isaak's wonderful Wicked Game, which soundtracked the Nicolas Cage/Laura Dern movie Wild At Heart. GD's version, like most of the album, is lo-fi, but like the rest of this record, it's sublime all the same.
