DIY geniuses release salty follow-up to Mercury-nominated masterpiece
Of the many bands who seek to marry dance music with rock, Hot Chip are one of the most interesting – thanks to the broad church they draw their influences from. While previous singles such as Boy From School see them lumped with punk/funk maestros like Q And Not U or LCD Soundsystem, their overall sound is far less single-stringed; here, their previously-explored R&B side jostles with the uptempo dance direction and makes for compelling listening.
As on their brilliant last album, The Warning, they blend skilfully-created and funky dance and soul beats with songwriting that is by turns elegiac and hypnotically repetitive – in some cases, such as album highlight Don’t Dance, within the space of one song. The jittery electro of Bendable, Poseable will please the club kids, whereas Whistle For Will and We’re Looking For A Lot Of Love should appeal to more sensitive listeners. Furthermore, the lack of glitchy electronica makes this superb album even more accessible than they’ve been in the past.
