To be released via the Internet, one can only hope this rather sublime album achieves the recognition it deserves.
Ilya, for those not in the know, are Bristolians Joanna Swan and Nick Pullin. Swan has a stunning voice, with a range that encompasses the late great Dusty Springfield - especially on In The Valley - and, at times, the no less wonderful Nina Simone.
There is a breathy quality to Swan's vocals, much like that of Julie Cruise, she of the dreamy soundtrack to the David Lynch TV fest that was Twin Peaks. Somerset is redolent of warm, lazy days and is certainly in the easy-listening mode throughout.
It often has a distinctly Sixties feel, with sparse production and arrangements that would suit a film starring a youthful David Hemmings or Michael Caine racking up the nostalgia stakes. At other times it sounds like homage to sleazy jazz of the Fifties.
This album has been languishing on someone's shelf for two years, apparently. It's been worth the wait.
