Serena-Maneesh - Serena-Maneesh review

Evoking the likes of My Bloody Valentine, the Jesus & Mary Chain and Primal Scream, quintet Serena-Maneesh fashion alternative rock'n'roll interwoven with glorious atmospheric effects.

Ethereal vocals, distorted guitars, pounding drums, all are here on this debut album by one of the latest talents to emerge from Norway. In much the same way as folks from countries such as Norway and Sweden can more often than not speak English better than people actually born in England, so bands from across the North Sea often turn out much more interesting rock music than that found on these shores. Not for them the jagged robotics of a Franz Ferdinand or the like; no, S-M weave glorious melodies in amongst their fast, dark and furious rock music. It's not hugely demanding but moderately off the wall.

Some of the material strays into early Floyd territory, notably Candlelighted, while a song like Drain Cosmetics harks back to the Bloody Valentine era.

While this certainly isn't the best thing since the musical equivalent of sliced bread, there is more than enough on here to satisfy someone looking for a new take on the rock genre.
