Yard Sale is technically the third album from the Beauty Shop, who are John Hoffleur (vocals and guitar), Ben "Cheech" Ucherek (drums) and Ariane Perlata (bass). In fact it is actually a selection of tracks taken from the band's debut and second albums, which never saw the light of day on this side of the Atlantic.
Listening to this one hopes there will be a clamour for 2002's Yr Money Or Yr Life and Crisis Helpline, released in 2004, to get a full airing here. The Beauty Shop do lo-fi country just about better than anyone else around at the moment.
Darker than Johnny Cash, more sardonic than Leonard Cohen, frontman John Hoeffleur delivers his witty lyrics in a vocal style that, while directly comparable with Crash Test Dummies' Brad Roberts, echoes these two great singer songwriters. But it's his air of cheeky insolence that sets him apart from such legends, which is no bad thing.
Stand out tracks are the see-saw country ditty A Desperate Cry For Help and the thoughtful Science Lights.
