The Little Willies - The Little Willies review

The side project of jazz chanteuse Norah Jones, The Little Willies first got together in a New York bar jam session, er... thing and subsequently decided to put together an album mainly of covers of songs by artists who have inspired and influenced the musicians involved.

So we get new takes on songs by Willie Nelson (Gotta Get Drunk and Nightlife), Kris Kristofferson (Best Of All Possible Worlds) and Lieber & Stoller (Love Me) plus some others, as well as a couple of originals.

It's all good time fun, up to a point, and one can imagine sitting in the smoky old bar that spawned the band in the first place. Norah purrs her ubiquitously silky vocals and the band respond with lazy slow blues.

It's mainly laid back, but peps up from time to time, especially on the Kristofferson track - with a hefty chunk of twangy guitar-pickin'.

One gets the feeling though that this one will be for truly dedicated Jones' fans who would probably snap up recordings of her reading out her grocery bill if the record company were ever to release it in a deluxe sleeve. OK, now we're being just plain silly.
